The political theme these days seems to be Change.

What fallacy is this?

I don’t like what is going on in D.C.
This person wants to change everything.
Therefore I am going to vote for him.

Now I don’t think everything is perfect in our government but those that use the reasoning above seem to be missing something.

Your logic thoughts, (Not your political ones cool smile )

It might be a type of high-tech fallacy. This is where someone appeals to something because it is new and different. It’s the opposite of the appeal to tradition. “Vote for our conservative candidate: keep things the way they are.”

The unstated premise perhaps is that everything is pessimal (that’s the opposite of optimal…) and couldn’t get any worse; therefore change—any change whatsoever—must be an improvement.

The politician (you know which one!) is playing on the unfortunate high level of cynicism among the populace.

So.. shall we call this one appeal to cynicism?

Vague.

This person wants to change everything.

Hyperbole, and hasty generalization.

Therefore I am going to vote for him.

This conclusion doesn’t necessarily flow from the premises.
