From the vault…
NEW YORK–Hundreds of thousands of people around the world yesterday joined with mourning Americans in grieving the loss of NBC's hit sitcom Friends, which has reached its tenth and final year. Huge rallies were held in Berlin, Paris, Cape Town, and Tokyo in support of the emotional loss this country has suffered. As "I'll Be There For You" by The Rembrants (the show's theme song) blared in the background, supporters cried and held up signs such as "Never Forget" "We Grieve Too," and "Friends is America's Gift to the World." In Washington President Bush observed a moment of silence as the hour approached, saying that "Ross, Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Joey, and Phoebe helped bring democracy to a starving world."
Response to the Friends finale in the Arab world was surprising. President Musharaff of Pakistan admitted that he has long enjoyed the show and is sad to see it end. "It was also too bad Chandler left the show," he commented. Several noted imams announced their intention to pray for the actors as this "great stage in their journey passes." Even Osama Bin Laden, known for being somewhat critical of modern American morality, broke his habitual silence by releasing a video of himself enjoying classic episodes of the sitcom and laughing hysterically. "While I don't exactly favor the immodest dress and behavior of Western women," said Bin Laden, "we in Al-Qaida are still big fans of Jennifer Aniston."
