The Lure of Narnia

Chris Yokel over at Ideas and Paradigms has a cool article on "The Lure of Narnia." One of Chris's points is the dogmatic rigidity of modernism, and I'm always glad to hear the ringing of steel on iron as that beastly little vampire gets another nail in its coffin. Here's a paragraph from the essay, liberally sprinkled with my own shamelessly-self-promoting hyperlinks.

…I believe Lewis was trying to counter the ultra-rational rigidity of scientific modernism, which had stripped the world of all its wonder by reducing everything to natural laws and cause-and-effect. He wanted us to regain a sense of the supernatural, of the "magical" that inhabits our world. That is done best, of course, by transporting us to another world, by moving us out of our familiar environment, and into another that is not totally foreign, but strange enough to shake us out of our comfort zones. Thus, it is through Digory and Polly, through the Pevensies, and later Eustace and Jill, that we learn the lessons Lewis has for us.

Shameless plug indeed! You owe me like 20 bucks for each of those hyperlinks. ./chrisalexion_2008-10_wordpress_export_files/icon_wink.gif alt=- class=wp-smiley
