1. I'm generally a mainstream fan when it comes to music. It's not that I'm against Christian bands; it's simply that I hesitate to embrace the retreatist mindset and other issues prevalent in some areas of CCM. Most of the Christian groups I like (Switchfoot, Creed, U2, P.O.D.) actually record on mainstream labels. I'd like to post more on this in the future.
That said, I'm not so critical of CCM that I won't applaud when it gets something right. The punk-pop band Relient K is solid and catchy, and garned mainstream attention lately with "Who I Am Hates Who I've Been" and "Be My Escape." Three cheers for the guys from Ohio.
2. On a purely mainstream note, I'm liking Gavin DeGraw's music more and more, at least based on his radio releases. (Unlike some of my wealthier friends, I don't buy many CDs….) DeGraw combines musical talent with great vocals and well-written songs. He may be one to watch.
