Pharming Parties

Time reports (Aug. 1, 2005) that a growing number of American teens are engaging in "Pharming"–trading and abusing prescription medications. The article described one such party–held while parents were away–in which kids swapped Ritalin, Oxycontin, and other drugs leftover from tooth extractions, ADD treatments, etc.

So when do we realize that the state's war on drugs misses the point? Not only has the state failed to keep illegal drugs out of the hands of users, but driving them underground is now making prescriptions an alternative for getting high. The key here is in the above paragraph: this all happens while the parents are away. The solution, ultimately, to problems like drug abuse is not an expanded state, but a stronger family government (and other non-coercive associations like church and business).

A strong family protects children better than the omni-competent maternal state ever could. I can really appreciate the vision of Reformed Christians dedicated to reforming the family and restoring it to its proper place in God's order. We're in the basic stages now–after all, it isn't quick or easy rebuilding a whole culture ravaged by humanism and statism–but parents who raise their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord are taking vital steps toward needed change.
