MEMPHIS, TN–A Joy Williams concert yesterday came to a halt when Williams nearly swallowed her microphone. The Contemporary Christian artist was singing particularly close to the device when eyewitnesses say she took too deep a breath and somehow got the microphone stuck in her mouth.
"I was in the front row," said fan Tina Stroebel, "and it was horrible. She kind of leaned over, and the next minute she was on the floor choking."
Williams was given first aid by her drummer, who succeeded in dislodging the microphone. Williams was rushed to the hospital for tests, but was doctors say it's merely routine. "She appears fine," said Dr. Ralph Conrad. "She should be released today."
Williams said she was frightened but is relieved. "I've been singing like that for years, but I never expected to almost choke on a microphone," she said. "But there are hazards to any job. I guess my singing style is just a little risky."

Joy went on to report that she saw Avril Lavigne inhale the mic at one of her concerts, and at the time, thought it would good idea too. Joy's roadies will now install special sensors on her mic to prevent any future on-stage drama.

What you said about Joy the other night at the Embrees inspired me to write this for a magazine when I saw a review of her latest album in their top 5. Some of this vocabulary is just fun to write; not to read - sorry about that:
"I was disappointed to see the positive review of Genesis by Joy Williams in your latest issue. While some of her lyrics may be "good," her vocals are suggestive and lasciviously evocative, reminiscent of the same vices secular bubble-gummers, and pop stars rely upon for provocative attention. Some people call her style "cute"; I call it a little too obvious."
Good story! What's your opinion on Rebecca St. James?

That's a great letter, Jenn. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one to recognize stuff like this. One more thing on Joy Williams: her suggestive style isn't even a natural one. Even a musical Philistine like me can see she's forcing it–and in doing so, sounding worse than many secular vocalists.
On RSJ: It's been a while since I've heard her. I think the element is there, but not as overtly as in JW.
