Mike slid his backback down the booth and sat down beside it. "What's going on?" he asked his two friends as he set his cappuccino on the table.
"Not much," replied Eric. Mike, Eric, and Jason had become friends during their freshmen year at college. Now, at the start of their first sophomore semester, they were grabbing some drinks at the campus coffeehouse. "Me and Jason got stuck with this bad course, though."
"Which one?"
"Business Ethics. The prof is really tough," said Jason.
Mike nodded. "You had him last semester?"
"Naw," said Eric, "but I've heard about him. I really don't agree with the way he runs his classes." Jason nodded his assent as he took a swig of latte.
Mike frowned at his drink. "And you know this, how?"
"Oh, just from around. Like I said, I haven't had any of his courses or anything. But if he were to ask me, I could recommend a change or two. You know, exam scheduling, homework assignments, student interaction."
Another frown bent the corners of Mike's mouth. "What do you think, Jason?"
"To me, this textbook is the problem." Jason dismally surveyed the volume in front of him. "It's laid out all wrong, and isn't adequate for the course it goes with."
Mike raised an eyebrow. "Wow…you've read the book already?"
"Nope." Jason's answer was definitive, and followed by another celebratory swig.
Mike watched the coffee dribbling down Jason's chin with dismay. What were his friends talking about? "I still don't see where you come off judging the course this way," he managed.
Eric snorted. "You don't need to know much to see right through the prof. His motives are all wrong. Can't you see the arrogance and delight in causing students trouble?"
"But that's just it. I can't see his motives. And I had the guy last semester. Most of us got A's."
Jason rose from the booth. "Look, Eric; we gotta run," he said. "But don't worry, Mike. Eventually you'll pick up the ability to read people at a glance like we can." Jason tossed his cup toward the trash can and steered his way to the door.
Yeah, and critique books before I read them, too, Mike commented inwardly.
He looked up just in time to see Jason's cup hit the rim of the trash can and bounce off.
