I recently started reading Chesterton's Father Brown mysteries. My sister had recommended them for a while, and I finally got around to checking out the stories for myself. There's something appealing about a priest who solves mysteries, and Father Brown's humble, laconic demeanor and inexplicable insight make a delightful combination. Whether it's outwitting the world's greatest thief (twice) or discovering how a beheaded man got past an insurmountable garden wall, Fr. Brown is always in top form and usually baffles readers until the last paragraphs of the stories.
And speaking of crime-solving clerics, Focus on the Family has produced a series of radio dramas featuring Father Gilbert, an Anglican vicar and former Scotland Yard inspector. These stories, artfully and believably blending mystery with the spiritual–and even the paranormal–are well worth checking out.
